This is the book I learned from 30 years ago, but it has been updated and improved.  It won't teach you to be a massage therapist, but you can learn to give your friends and loved ones a relaxing, sociable, pleasant massage.

A classic book for everyone's bookshelf.

Note: Times have changed since 1972. Back then, "draping" was a novel concept, and the illustrations in this book assume that both the giver and receiver are nude. They are tasteful line drawings that remind us old hippies of a simpler, more innocent, more optimistic time. They may not be appropriate for today's more conservative readers. The book also contains massage tips for lovers. This is not a book for prudes!

This DVD is an overview of Esalen massage.

Esalen massage is slow, intuitive, calming, and nurturing. This video is a beautiful introduction to Esalen style massage, suitable for amateurs or professionals.

The video is geared to those who learn by watching and doing, rather than those who learn by listening. There is little verbal commentary, and no specific instructions for individual massage strokes. I have studied at Esalen, and this approach is their typical approach to teaching/learning. They don't lecture: they just let you learn by experience.

Beautifully photographed, and a must for every LMT's collection.

The Anatomy Coloring Book.

There are a lot of clones of this book in the stores. This one is the best.

It's great for massage therapists, artists, nurses, medical students, kids, or anyone who wants to learn how the body is put together but doesn't want it to be drudgery.

Perfect for the hands-on learner.

Recommended for Massage Therapists

Unlike other anatomy/kinesiology texts, this book was written from the point of view of a dancer. The result is a fascinating, dynamic, easy-to-understand adventure in anatomy and movement. Its brilliantly simple illustrations and refreshingly different attitude will help make the dry textbooks already on your shelf crystal clear.
One of three essential review guides for the NCBTMB exam.  This one is a good list of things you need to know to pass the exam.

I found it essential for boning up on Traditional Chinese Medicine, which I had pretty much skipped over in school.

The other two essential review guides for the NCBTMB exam.

As much as I dislike this book because of its inaccuracies, it's the best way to drill for the exam. If you can answer all of these questions correctly, you will pass with flying colors.

The one warning I must give is this: some of the answers to the questions are wrong. In a way, that's good because it keeps you on your toes. If you don't understand the reasoning for the answers given, just look it up.

The Trail Guide to the Body is probably already in your library. If not, it should be. This book is essential for massage school, and it's a reference book that you can use daily thereafter.

The accompanying student handbook is a great aid for studying for NCBTMB exams.

We massage therapists are prone to repetitive motion injuries that can cut our careers short. This book will help you detect, treat, and prevent such injuries.

Note: if you are hypermobile, you definitely need to read this book!

Recommended for Couples

This is the kind of massage you can't get from me!

This pair of DVDs will teach you and your mate how to give each other an amazing erotic massage. These videos are packed with practical hands-on techniques for lovers. Narrated by Joseph Kramer, founder of the Body Electric school, and Annie Sprinkle, former porn star, current sex activist and sex enthusiast.

Note: the images in these videos are frank and explicit, but they are tasteful, and intended for education rather than titillation. GLBT and straight friendly
